First of all, you sound awesome! Can definitely tell you've been doing this for a while! Only thing that comes to mind is a liiiittle bit of distortion caused by over limiting/compression.
Hi Tanya!
I can listen to a lot of distortion in the file. You may want to lower the gain from your interface a lot! The main problem here is the massive hiss that is completely present throughout the recording and, after listening to various samples you have in your SoundCloud I can be almost 100% sure that the problem is coming from your gear.
Are you using a USB microphone? If you're using a mic + interface combo, do you have another microphone you can try with your interface with? It really does sound as if the capsule of your microphone was busted and it's creating this weird hiss and distortion when you speak.
There are also several editing issues that throw the flow of the recording. Your voice is really great, but there are edits in the middle of the file that are very noticeable because they clip slightly and the tone is a tad different (this is from the first sample uploaded 5 days ago). It's important to pinpoint where you're editing the recording and do it at the end of a sentence, or where you find a pause. I know this may mean you have to re-record more from a section than usual, but it will make a difference when it comes to editing.
If you can, please share with us which gear you use so we can help you out there!
Hi Tanya!
I really like your demos. I think you have a great voice.
As Angela mentions, there is undesired hiss in your recordings. The noise floor is too loud, so your voice gets covered by all that white noise. If you try to solve that in post-production, you'll be forced to add a noise reduction plugin to cut heavily the high frequency spectrum. This will degrade the quality of your audio, and will make your voice sound opaque and unbalanced as you are EQ all the high frequencies.
Also, watch out for the sound bleeding from your headphones and going picked by the mic. You can hear what I mean in the audio Hypnotic.
What equipment are you using? Maybe we can find where all that noise is coming from.
Best,
Juan
