Please tell me what is wrong with my British accent on "From America" and Together

    Hi,

Thanks for sharing your sample! It sounds as if the musicality or upward intonation of the words isn't traditionally British. I guess it's hard to describe with words. Hopefully, someone else can give their 2 cents?

    Hi Seb.

    Thank you for your reply.

I see given your last name, you are possibly not from Britain and you don't have a British accent, yes? Do you have QC reviewers with native British accents and if so, are all British accent jobs run past them?

    Please let me know.

I would appreciate it if someone else who is from Britain could please comment on my post. Thank you.

Hello! I would say ‘America’ sounds a bit odd - I think it should be said clearer, as in ‘a-meh-ricka’ if you see what I mean? I think the ‘together’ actually sounds ok. I am British by the way!

Thanks for commenting Claire. Much appreciated! Yes, I did wonder re. the 'Together'.... I see I could have put more "a" in the "meh" part... I have just done a big "ambigous" accented gig a few days ago in which the clients directed a weird Brit-Antipodean-Italian mix with an incredibly strange mixture of vowels and it has messed with me, and my ears!

Well my hat goes off to you for trying a British accent! I’m sure my American accent would be spotted a mile off as not genuine! All the best - Claire 😊

Hello! Well done for giving it your best shot - it is not always straightforward. Britain, and even England has an extensive mix of accents, so that is difficult to come to terms with in itself! If you are trying to talk in the most traditional English accent, the issue you are having is simply with intonation. I think my accent is much more 'plain' than the one I can hear in the audio. You seem to go up at the end of both words, which is something that English people never do:)! I think you are emphasizing the 'CA' of America too much (when the emphasis is more on the 'ME' syllable) and also the 'THER' of Together. The word 'together' actually sounds slightly Australian as the 'GE' needs to be pronounced 'GEH'.

    I hope this helps!!

Thanks Kitty, yes, I have grown up around principally around a British high-class ex-pat accent from Hong Kong, from when it was a British Colony. Very 'received pronunciation'. I have taken the words out of context in the file cut which doesn't help, but the intonation thing would make sense and is possibly an ex-pat thing??  Thanks so much for your comment. much appreciated :-)
