Rejected work due to "boxiness"

Over time, QC has rejected my work stated that there's boxiness, echo, background noise, or all three.

I'm recording in a 4'x6' closet enclosed with foam (and clothes).

I recently turned down the gain on my interface and it sounds better to me and the revision was accepted by the client. Perhaps that was the issue all along? Not sure yet, but anything I can do in the meantime would be helpful to prepare me for the next project... with hopefully no rejections.
