Feedback on Quality Issues
Hey Team,
I got a notice from VBQC about recurring issues in my submissions I need to address and I'd love some help on the subject. This is what they're concerned about:
a) Recording has noticeable sibilances.
b) Audio lacks bass and mid-bass frequencies.
And I have a couple of samples from recent projects here.

Thanks for your help in advance and all the best!

Hi Erin, thanks for reaching out.
In these samples that you shared with us, the sibilance is perceived. I can also notice that the background noise is noticeable in some parts.
First I would like to know what type of processing you are using on the signal so I can help you correct the sibilance issue. Regarding the backgroundnoise, is important that you record in a quiet environment because sometimes the cars are noticeable.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best,
Steven!
Hi Steven,
I appreciate your feedback. I've got a Neumann TLM 103 and an Apollo Twin X. I have a fully enclosed booth and I'm using a noise floor so you shouldn't be hearing the cars, but I can raise the noise floor. For Sibilance I'm using izotope's RX10 Dess

I use ableton live.
Thanks
Hi Erin.
Checking your samples, I found that the sibilances are overpowering in the zone between 7kHz and 10kHz. One way to address this is by configuring the de-esser to reduce more of those frequencies. You can also try using a dynamic EQ or another de-esser set to reduce that specific range. Another way to solve this issue is by reducing the strength of the sibilances when you speak. I found this video that may help: https://youtu.be/XVo0nAEjwR4?si=Wc05HQXfM9Wjao28&t=139.
Regarding the background noise the less noise reduction you use the better because that makes your recording sound undesirably overprocessed wich is another issue we found in your audios. So I'd recommend not using too much noise reduction and, instead, recording during quieter times of the day to avoid unwanted noises. You could also explore ways to better isolate the booth.
Regards,
Steven
Hi Steven,
This is all really helpful. Thank you! I'll be implementing this today.
