I was told to post, so here I am. Getting feedback on recording quality

Hi Amy! Chuck here, another VB Pro. I see that no one has answered you yet, so I though that I'd chime in.

I don't know *why* you were asked to be critiqued, but here's what I hear.

First off, I love your read and the quality of your voice. Excellent enunciation, and very pleasant to listen to. You sound professional, which is not surprising considering your experience in the industry.

When I listed to your sample, I could hear the tiniest bit of mouth noise; for example, at the 3 second mark, after you say "visit our website." There also seems to be a level of background noise in the file. Check out the pause at the 7-second mark to hear what I'm talking about. Even then, I had to listen at high volumes to pick out those issues.

Also, may I ask what mic you're using? There's no signal above 15khz, which takes away the natural sparkle and air in your voice. And there seems to be excessive noise below 100hz that adds a certain dullness, which is accentuated by the lack of high frequencies.

For curiosity, I put a high-pass filter on your voice over at 100hz, with a 2db dip at 200hz. Those two moves added a lot of clarity to your voice.

That said, these are only minor issues that could be easily addressed; the quality of your voice work is miles ahead of many that I hear on this platform. If I had a voice over job that needed a female voice, I wouldn't hesitate to hire you.

    Cheers, Chuck

Hi Amy, thanks for reaching out.

I listened to your sample, and I agree with what Chuck mentioned:

    1. There's a high level of background noise that seems to be coming from some air conditioning. Apart from turning that device off, you can apply some high pass filter around 100Hz to remove any unwanted rumble in the background.
    2. Your audio doesn't have information above 16kHz, but it's likely due to the mp3 quality settings during export. I suggest sharing a sample in WAV format to assess this.
    3. There's a bit of room echo, which are reflections occurring on the walls of the place where you're recording. I recommend increasing the acoustic treatment a bit more, although this is the least noticeable issue.

I look forward to your comments, and I hope this is helpful.

    Best regards,

    Steven

    Hi guys,

Thanks for responding...I appreciate the feedback, but I was only posting because Voicebunny told me if I didn't post something, to get critiqued, then I would lose the ability to use their platform for work..They literally want me to jump through hoops on this message board.  I have been on this platform since the beginning of this platform, have submitted hundreds and hundreds of jobs for clients, and not one client has ever requested another read from me due to my quality.  Most of these recordings are for radio or tv spots that have music put under them, and when radio stations put their own processing on them (I have tried to put my own processing on them, but then voicebunny rejects it for that, so I cant even do that), you aren't going to hear anything but a smooth sounding spot.  OR, I do a lot of phone IVR here, so the faintest room noise wont even come through when these clients put it into their system.  This platform was great to make some extra money in the past, but the silliness of all of this having to post samples when I have been in the biz for decades is maddening to me.  I have been using the same studio at my radio station for the past 4 years..and VB is picking apart every little thing now.  I use several other platforms and no one on those platforms has ever said anything to me regarding my sound.  It's just silly and petty to me.  I had another client actually find me on Voicebunny because they know how difficult they can be, and hire me outside the platform.  I hope they get their act together soon.  Thanks again

    Thank you for responding, Steven

I assure you, I take all my recording for clients, whether big or small, seriously.  The end result is we want the client happy, and by judging from my feedback from clients, I'd say they are.
