Let me start by saying you've got a great voice! In your recordings, I can hear some sort of fan or room noise and it is very noticeable on all the recordings. Did you use processing on these? If you did turn it off; in fact, turn all effects off including EQ if you used it and repost one or two of these and see if that helps clear things up.
The fan noise he mentions I believe it's coming from your equipment rather than from the space. Can you please share with us how you're recording? Like which type of microphone, interface, etc. you're using. Also, please share a raw recording as I can definitely pick up the filtering as well.
I am using an AKG P120 Condenser Microphone, which I was told was a very good one (not cheap by any means).
As far as the interface I am using, it is a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd generation 2-in/2-out USB Audio Interface.
I don't filter anything, unless I am and I don't even realize it since I am pretty new to the whole VO carreer (7 months).
Trey mentions Processing (not sure what that is) and also EQ (no clue what that is either)!! So any guidance on those two items will be greatly appreciated. Once I have it figured out if I am doing either of those, I will resubmit a couple of samples and hopefully that will do it!
I also am using an HP Laptop but the fan on it is definitely not loud and my room is very well sound proofed.
I do have the microphone on a tripod type stand which is made for it. Not sure if that would cause an issue.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I have heard from a couple other sites, including ACX Audiobooks which I have produced 6 books off 24 auditions (I believe that is pretty good) that my voice is very good and I should be getting work. My hope is my issues are equipment or recording related and once those are taken care of I can be off and running!
Thank you for your insights. I do agree that your voice is fantastic! It's just a matter of making some tweaks here and there for your quality so you're all set.
The equipment you mention is really good, so the problems could be coming from the space and/or processing.
When we talk about "processing" we talk about extra things you do to edit the recording. For example, using de-breathing, de-noisers, etc. EQ stands for equalizer which is a tool that is used to modify the frequency response of the recording. There are automatic ones and manual ones depending on the editing software you use. So, do you use something after you record? Like, do you select some parameters from the software that could be changing the sound from the file?
I suggest you to record only! This leaves the recording as raw as possible and it would make it much easier for us to give you insights :)
Ok, so I listen to some of your files and the quality varies a bit between then. For ex, campy_radio_ad.mp3 has a many loud and distracting clicks and mouth noises. In general the recording sounds a bit filtered and bright.
Campy_african_american sounds much better. There are some clicks that could be removed, but it sounds well.
Campy_texas_forever has what sounds as a fan. Some parts sound monotone and somewhat robotic (0:10). On that same part some parts are distorting a bit.
I think you can push back on the preamps gain a bit and then raise the volume in the DAW. That can help us reduce the noise floor and avoid distortion.
Are you adding any sort of processing to the chain? EQ, compression, limiters?
Really appreciate the feedback. I did some reading and found out what the EQ is. I have made adjustments and re-saved the three samples you referred to. The Texas Forever one was read as they requested.
Please take a listen all three when you have a moment and let me know if you hear the differences I have made!
Also, the African American one was a test one so I cleaned it up and re-saved it as well.
I think they sound much better! I can hear some loud and distracting mouth clicks, that could be avoided/removed. There's still a bit of hiss, and I think that we can still pull back the compressor/limiter back a little. It's still too aggressive and that can be raising the noise floor, too.
Performance-wise I think you can still try a more natural and conversational tone. Some parts felt a bit hesitant and insecure.
Hey John!
Can you please link the samples? You can share a Dropbox, Soundcloud or Google Drive link! :)

Just a VB Pro like you.
Hi John!
I definitely agree with Trey's comments here.

Hi Angela,
I appreciate the feedback on my voice! I believe the main problem is my set up.
I have changed a couple things and would appreciate all feedback Please take a listen to the attached and let me know if you all find any improvement!
