    Hi Charlie,

I've listened to both of your samples and I do hear a few room reflections, especially on the 2nd test. I think a middle point in between the two would be ideal in terms of EQ, as the first one can sound bassy and the second one almost filtered. The second one perhaps sounds more distant? How far away from the mic are you recording?

You're definitely not far at all! Remember you can apply again.

    Thanks a million Seb

Tried again. I want to make sure it's going to work before I send for another application. Would you have a quick listen to that and see what you think?

In the first one I was close, in the second I was about 6 inches away

    I've split the difference

    Hey Charlie,

I agree, the RE-20 is a superb mic! With that one, you can definitely go closer. The trouble is if you're far you can "hear" the room you're recording in which is not ideal (and some clients complain about!).

I'd suggest adding some acoustic treatment to your room and staying away from reflective surfaces. For example, if you have the mic on a table or in front of a screen those might cause undesirable reflections.

    Hi Charlie!

I believe I replied in a different thread of yours but let me jump on the wagon here!

I have to agree with Seb that the RE20 is a fantastic mic. It requires a bit too much gain so you also have to be super careful not to create a lot of hiss due to adding excessive gain. If you're using this one, I suggest you get a signal lifter or a preamplifier. A signal lifter is much more common as it requires less adjusting and has fewer parameters.

So, in regards to the room echo, I do believe it's a matter of checking how you're treating the space you're recording in and taking some measures. Your mic should be isolated and you need to take care of the adjacent surfaces that may be creating extra reflections. Aside from tables or screens, I'd also watch out for plywood floors, windows, mirrors, metallic frames and/or transparent plastic which usually create a lot of reflections. Keep your recording space far away from these type of surfaces or having a way to cover them to record should help!

    Hi Charlie!

This recording sounds much better! There're still some reflections, but I think it sounds better than what it did before! What about you record diagonally and off-axis from the microphone? It could help! I'd also check if you have surfaces around you, like desks, that could be creating extra reflections.

    Thank you, Charlie!

Hope this helps! I suggest you share a recording here before sending the new application. This way we can tell you if the changes were successful.

    Looking forward to it!

    Hi, Charlie,

This last sample sounds better than the third one and hopefully should be enough to get you through. I don't hear the room reflections that were prevalent in the other samples so I'd say give it a go.

If you want, share the audition recording before submitting.

    Hi Charlie!

The new project should arrive from 7 to 31 days after you sent the request. If you don't receive it after this time has passed, let us know and we'll check what could've happened!

Hey Angela and Seb. Thank you so much for all your help. You guys are the absolute best!

I failed again! Haha. They are so strict here. I'm doing loads of pro jobs in this studio and recording every day, but I just can't seem to pass the bar here. I might have one more go. Recorded these yesterday on a new mic. Warm audio 80 something:

seems to help get rid of the bass sound i got from the electrovoice which I think was what was ringing in the room

    Hi Charlie

Thanks for sharing. This recording still has some reflections that emphasize several frequencies that make your voice sound quite metallic. It also adds some room echo so I don't believe the file is actually approvable. I'm sorry!

I suggest you review your recording space and see which surface(s) could be reflecting the sound and creating this effect. It's very important to consider that your quality will depend A LOT on your space. You can have the best mic and interface in the world, but if your room acoustics are failing, your voice will create a lot of problems and reduce its quality.
