Honest Tech Feedback, Please

I can't really give feedback on the tech side although it sounds clear to me and not over processed but I don't have the "ear" yet. You have a nice voice and it sounds like you should relax a little and have a bit more real energy. I think if you relaxed your beautiful voice would even sound more rich.

Aww thank you. Yes I may have been a bit stressed.  Good to know this can be heard.  This was my audition that was declined for Mr. Bunny and I know the reasons stated in the email, but I am trying to see what others hear technically.

You can tell that you edited out the parts where your not talking but unfortunately when there is vocals the white or background noise is pretty clear, almost sounds like a fan.  Overall you have a (Boxiness sound) in the whole recording, almost like your in a super tiny closet where theres not enough space for the sound to go.  Anyways thats what I heard with the headphones on but you gotta start somewhere.  Im not trying to be mean thats just what I heard.  Wish you the best!

Not mean at all, I appreciate it. I think I finally found the background hum. My AI was doing something funky. As soon as I switched it out, it was gone.  This was all tested with a new set up, so that was probably a bad idea on my part.  No one had mentioned the boxiness until I changed things! Back to the drawing board!

Would you mind sharing your whole setup?

Well on this recording I used an MXL VO 1a, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (now replaced...it was humming) Marshall xlr cord (also now replaced with Mogami) Adobe Audition. My space is 5x5, acoustic foam on the wall in front of me which backs to a closet. Above and around me is a structure covered in sound blankets. It's rather nice lol. I use either the isotope or ns1 to slightly reduce noise but obviously something else is set improperly. I'm not at my computer to see right now. I was using the AT2020 mic before the XLR.

Hmm okay, i like the 2i2 its a nice piece of gear.  Are all of the hard surfaces in the closet padded?  What position is the gain knob at when you record before normalizing?  In that entire space where is the position of your mic?

The closet is separate. I just meant that wall of my recording area doesn't back to a wall going to outside traffic or the neighbor's kitchen :)  So, I face the wall that is against the closet and it has acoustic foam on it.

I switched out the 2i2 for a solo.  I no longer have a hum.  There was something not right with it.  Maybe there was a loose wire in it.

Gain is turned up so that my vocals show between -12 to -6 db when I speak (on the adobe audition meter), the solo light shows green.

Mic is 8' from my mouth with pop filter in front and the condenser inside is parallel with my lips... lust a tad lower than center.

Yes I understand that I am asking when I asked what position is the gain knob at I meant as in the 12 o'clock position or 3?  Have you moved the mic in different positions and corners of the closet?

2:30 :) and no I have myself pretty much set that the most solid wall is in front of me.

Do you think I should move?  So as I sit, I look at my mic then to the solid wall covered in acoustic foam.

To my right is a solid wall with a sound blanket

To my right is a sound blanket and acoustic foam

Behind me is a sound blanket x2

Above me is a sound blanket x2, a space of 2 ft then the ceiling

I'm basically in a little structure :)  I know it's odd but I'm in an apartment and it's worked for me so far... until I changed my gear!

So, while I am in the midst of trying things out, I am borrowing some microphones to try out to see how they sound..

    Rode NTG2

    Rode NT1

as well as my AT2020, MXL VO1a, Behringer Ultravoice XM8500.

My goal is to find one I really like the sound of for me and fix my space before I reapply for Bunny.

Hmmmm if I had to choose one out of all those I would probably stick with the Rode.  It tends to add brightness and compliment higher pitch voices.  I think it sounds good with female voices.  Definitely try the mic in different positions and make sure its not to close to the wall because you need space for the sound to move.  Also if you have exposed corners in the walls above you that could potentially be a problem.  Thats all I can think of based on this.   Hope it helps!
