Recent rejection is confusing...

    Hi Robert,

There's a bit of background noise when you speak, it could be a fan or A/C. The reason why I think it was flagged is because this noise cuts out in bigger gaps, but can still be heard in smaller ones. For example it can be heard clearer in "we know this and take an obssessive approach". The trouble is some of the edit points are audible.

I'd suggest recording away from any source of noise. Also, make sure to use crossfades at edit points to prevent this issue.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Robert

I agree with Sebastián's comments. The recording has a very loud background noise when you're speaking but is cut abruptly when you make the cuts which could give the impression a noise gate was added. Also, the recording sounds quite boomy which could give the impression it was being filtered and removing almost all high frequencies.

Can you let us know you're recording? Aside from recording far from the source of the noise, maybe the microphone is boosting the low frequencies in your voice which is not ideal. If you can let us know the equipment you use and share some pics of your space we'd be able to give you more insights that may be helpful.

    Angela,

Thank you for taking the time to listen and critique this submission.

I took a hard look at my booth and made some changes to eliminate HVAC noise. I completely blocked off the vent that was in the room. This has eliminated the fan noise that was very apparent in that submission. Once that change was made, I have not received any further rejections. It is good to know that other professionals are willing to share their thoughts and ideas on how to become better.

With that said, I appreciate your advice concerning the microphone increasing the db of the low frequencies. I will take a look at the settings on my equipment as they could have been tampered with recently. I am currently using a Berringer Q802 soundboard and interface paired with a Marshal MXL770 microphone. I might be able to roll out some of the low-end pre-daw.

Once again, Thank you for your valuable input.

    Robert

    Hi Robert

Now that you've shared your equipment, I believe the hiss noise could be coming from the Behringer Q802. These control boards are usually very hissy as their AD/DA converters and pre-amplifiers are of lower quality to keep the equipment on the cheaper side. If you could try a different interface I'd highly recommend it.

    Hi Angela

I have noticed an occasional periodic hiss that pops up during long-form narrations. This is usually corrected when I process the raw audio. However, I do realize that I will need to upgrade my equipment as I progress. Do you have any suggestions for a better audio interface set up? There are certainly many to choose from. All suggestions are appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Robert

    Hi Robert!

There are various pieces that I'd recommend. I own a MOTU Track 16 which is a multi-channel interface and it has given me amazing quality. The preamps are very good and it's very small so it's portable and easy to use. Also, Focusrite has some really good and affordable solutions. I personally prefer the Scarlett 2i4 over the 2i2 but it works great, too.

There are also some other options like the Apogee One and the RME Babyface. These are a bit more high end and work really well.

    Hi Angela,

Thank you for this helpful advice. I will keep each of these in mind as I move forward with studio development. I have heard of several of these from other resources. Thank you for confirming these for me. I have not heard of the MOTU Track 16.

Once again, thank you for sharing.
