Audition Rejection

Thank you for sharing your work with us, Meg!

I'm still hearing some sound reflections throughout the file. That echo is definitely coming from the place you're recording in; maybe the floor, walls, and ceiling are not properly treated; or perhaps there's an object with a reflective surface near your microphone that's causing the sound waves to bounce around.

Also, I noticed a bit of hiss when I turned up the volume.

Our team is looking for unprocessed files, that have been recorded in a room that's soundproof, and that have only been normalized to -3dB. No over processing/compression/limiter needed.

    Hope that helps.

We'd love to receive a new file to see if those issues are no longer present.

    Best,

    Oscar

Hm. I've added more insulating foam since then. I've changed the mic location. I'm wondering if the microphone is picking up a faint hum from my computer. Other than editing for too deep of breaths the only "processing" is just through the preamp and fairly minimal. I suppose I'll keep playing with it and try again

It could be indeed that the mic is picking up computer noises, or even that a defective cable is contributing to getting hiss in the audio. That's a matter of testing your gear and listening closely to the changes.

Please, share a file once you've been able to soundproof the space even better so we can provide feedback if you consider it helpful.

    Best,

    Oscar.

Well after much fiddling and research it appears the white noise is what it is. Either my Focusrite Scarlett Solo or the Mic. I've changed out every cable, double checked all my settings and even moved the microphone far away from the computer tower. From what I was reading the focusrite does apparently have a noise floor. All my recordings show my noise floor around -68. Until I get the money for different equipment, it's the best I can do without damaging the vocal quality.

    I completely understand, Meg.

We'll be here to give you any feedback once you've been able to upgrade your equipment, although normally that Focusrite interface works well, so it can either be that it is damaged, or that something is wrong with the mic. Which mic are you using by the way?

The Mic is an Audio-Technica AT2035, run through a DBX 286S preamp/processor and the Focusrite Scarlett Solo.

My sound floor hovers between -68 and -62 with this setup. I record in a walk-in closet lined with soundproofing foam with no computer tower so everything is as quiet as I can manage for my particular situation.

    Hi Meg,

Have you tried bypassing the DBX and going straight into the Focusrite? Also, how much gain are you using when recording?
