    Hello Jon

I've listened to your file and it has some echo behind it (for example, listen closely at 0:02 the word "are"...). Make sure you're covering all the surfaces of your recording space with acoustic treatment in order to avoid any sound reflections.

Once you've fixed this issue, please share a new sample with us.

    Regards

Here is another recording. With and without post-processing. Is either acceptable for QC purposes?

    Thank you, Jo

The processed file has a very noticeable hiss impacting the recording. The plugin you've used has increased the presence of that noise.

On the other hand, the unprocessed file sounds a bit too low. If you normalize it to -3dB it will sound more clear. However, I'm not sure if it will also end up rising the noise level.

Did you happen to give these recent recordings more gain, compared to the first sample you shared with us? I'm trying to think where that hiss could be coming from.

The first recording was done at a studio, but the second was at my home studio where most of my projects are done.

    Here's a third recording: https://drive.google.com/open?id=19CzqYGmnVbMVN4E3eKCryoy4MtehB0qp

This time I tried to normalize. I had to set it to -11 rms as my daw (reaper) cannot do peak normalization as far as I know. But, in the VU meter, I can see it averaging to -3 dbfs. I added a limiter as well so that the lowest volumes are close to the highest peaks. Without limiting, there was too much dynamic range (some peaks too high and many lows too low).

    Hope that makes sense.

By the way, this 3rd recording is at my home studio, and I'll just use that one from now on, for consistency

    Hi Jon,

The audio sounds heavily compressed so we suggest you back off on the limiter, if absolutely needed make sure it doesn't reduce more than -2dB.  As far as I recall, in Reaper you do have the option of normalizing (right click on the region, then item processing-->normalize selected items) but you can't set a limit, so after normalizing you'd then have to bring the fader/gain down 3dB.

Here's the same file, but this time normalized and limited to -3db.

There should be no compression this time as I turned off the make-up gain.

    Hi Jon,

Yeah, this one sounds better (more dynamic). It still has some small issues like mouth clicks (at 0:16 & 0:19.6), which should be edited out when submitting deliverables. I'd also recommend recording an inch farther away from the mic.

    Here's yesterday's file re-edited and re-normalized file. It's on the samples page.

Here's a new one from today that was just rejected (but no email explaining why). I just deleted it. In any case, in this one I was more distant from the mic, as you had suggested. Not sure if it was rejected for the read or for technical issues.

    Hey Jon

The new one from today file has a very strange background noise throughout. You can clearly notice from the very beginning at 0:01 / 0:02 after "clear". The same happened at 0:05, 0:12, etc.

Regarding yesterday's file I've picked up a strong plosive at 0:01 "people", and other words like "popular" at 0:05 sound quite on the edge, so be careful when you upload your deliverables in projects as you might be asked for revisions ;)

Sorry, not hearing any noticeable background sound throughout. I do hear a some "nose" noise because my sinuses were a little blocked this morning, but it's just on a few syllables here and there. Also not that noticeable.  But, I wouldn't call that throughout. It's not constant.

If you can clarify, that would be great.

Ohh got it, so that sound comes from your nose. I actually was not sure at all what was that :)

By throughout I meant that I was able to notice it in different parts of the recording (at seconds 1-2, 3, 5, 12-13, 15)

I'm using ATH M50 to monitor the audio and I've been able to notice it by opening the volume knob to 30-40%

Yes, it's allergies that you're hearing, then. So, I guess that's why it was rejected? I never got an email from the main site. Strange, no?

Here is a new recording from today. I think I finally understand how to record and normalize for VB, but as you'll hear the level is a bit low. Is it too low?

I posted this as a sample, but I can delete it.

Looks like I was approved on the samples page for this clip, so I guess I'm finally on the right track!

    Correct Jon

Your sample was being assessed and for some reason, it showed as rejected when it actually wasn't.
