    Hi Juliet, g

I'm another voice, not a VB Manager, but will tell you what I hear.

First, what a great voice and delivery. Well done.

Second, I do seem to hear some room noise, VB calls it "hiss". Could be a furnace running, a fan, something like that in the background. Could also be some settings in your equipment.

Out of curiosity, what computer interface and microphone do you use?

I have had the same experience as you, with some previously accepted VB projects now being rejected on technical grounds. VoiceBunny may be getting more stringent in their Quality Control. Personally I think that's good, helps us all improve our sound, though it can be somewhat frustrating.

Will be curious to see what the VB Mangers have to say about your sample,

    Best regards,

    Joe Brown

    Hi, Juliet!

Joe B. is right on the money. I'm curious though on which samples were rejected? It would be very helpful if you could share the bulk of them for us to evaluate and then greenlight you re-uploading them to the platform.

Thanks a lot for letting us know about your concerns!

Thank you Joe and Hector for your feedback, I really appreciate it.

My kit is a Rode NT1A studio mic with SE reflection filter, Scarlett 2i2 interface and I use Logic Pro X.

I engaged the help of a sound technician in the Summer to help tweak and eliminate any unwanted sounds and he detected a low hum so we put a filter on it....which I thought had worked.

I have no way of tracing the deleted 'rejected' files though VB should have a record of what I deleted.

I will add here a sample recorded this weekend and would appreciate your support once more in listening to see if there is an improvement?

    Many thanks again,

    Juliet

    Hey Juliet,

I listened on different (supposedly better) headphones. The room sound seems better, but I do still hear that room tone in the background. It seems to be like a constant fan such as the air handling unit on a furnace or central air conditioning system.

Your equipment, while the mic and interface are ones I have never used, have good reputations, particularly the Scarlet. Rode has a great reputation as well.

Could be these new headphones but I seem to hear a good deal of low end in the signal. The filter that you put in - at what frequency does it roll off?

One other technique you might try is to put a noise gate in the mastering chain, but don't set it take all noise out - just set it to reduce gain about -10db or so during pauses. Make response times pretty fast - I use about a 10 millisecond entry setting, and about 50 millisecond release. You may also need to adjust with the threshold setting to avoid any "pumping" type effect.

Still, I think there is some room noise that needs to be either eliminated or treated acoustically.

    But it's not too bad!

As always, I defer to the the VB experts who likely have better headphones and certainly have younger ears!

    Best regards,

    Joe

    Hi Juliet,

Joe is right in many ways here! - Great to keep reading from you man, keep it up!

I'd like to ask the same question as he is: The filter that you put in - at what frequency does it roll-off? Because that could really help with that rumble in the lows.

You could also try the noise gate he's saying, but please please be very careful with that, I've seen so many people going that way and they end up messing up their audio, so please be very careful, you do have an amazing voice and we don't want it to be affected by some processing.

    Juliet and Johnatan,

Perhaps I should not suggest the gate - or at least qualify that it's use must be subtle. I've worked with my attack/release/threshold settings a whole lot over the years to make sure the results are inaudible.

I should also point out that I still do a good deal of editing in my pauses between sentences and paragraphs - not to eliminate room tone or breaths, but to make them sound natural and non-distracting.

So yes - do as Johnatan says and be VERY careful with any noise gate settings.

    Carry on.

    Hi Joe & Jonatan,

    Apologies for the radio silence.

I so appreciate your feedback and helpful suggestions. I'm not as technically minded as you Joe, so I had to consult a tech guy who has helped me with my set up before. He suggested a better mic cable.

So here are the results: https://www.dropbox.com/s/b5l7e2sp2585m50/business_qualitytestvb%3A8%3A11%3A19.wav?dl=0

My consultant tech guy thinks it's done the trick but I would love to know what you both think and get back to working with VB asap!

    Thank you.

    Hi Juliet,

Thanks for the new submission, I think we're getting closer here.

Two things to try to improve:

    • Background noise, sounds like a fan running on the background, maybe from a computer, you can clearly hear it at 0:15-0:17.
    • Sounds a little bit boomy, I don't if you're using EQ, but there's a boost on the low frequencies and it's not helping the quality of your audio.

Try to work on those two things and come back to us please, we're almost there!

    Hi Johnatan & Joe,

I'm back at last and hoping I've cracked it this time...I've relocated my mic to a converted broom cupboard!

Please take a listen & thank you again for all your support: it's a lonely job when things go wrong!

Amazing job!! This are sounding a lot better now, this is very encouraging for us, this is what this community is all about, you're never alone, you have fellow pros like Joe and the QC team for you.

I have, what I really think is the last one, a little comment.

I'd highly recommend you use fades towards the end of each phrase, sometimes you can hear distracting sounds, such as mouth clicks, mouse clicks, keyboard strokes or something else, I think this could help you with fades: https://help.bunnystudio.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360006728219-Why-should-I-use-fades-

Please give it a read, make sure you're using the right fades, and I think we're finally good to go.

Keep it up, don't despair, we're on the last yard here.

    Hi Johnatan,

Everything you could hear that was extraneous on the previous demo was from me: just a bit messy re mouth clicks as I remembered it was a super early morning demo for a client....There is no mouse or keyboard anywhere near the mic now as I have a remote access app on my phone so I 'm hoping that these three that I recorded today are free of mouthclicks etc.

Thank you for your encouragement and for bearing with me. I will learn about fades and have booked a lesson on it (for Logic Pro X) but your comments made me pay more attention to voicing in the new space and so I've been working on that technique and hoping that we are now good to go....?

    Hi Juliet,

Great news, your profile has been reactivated!

I just have one suggestion for you, please be extremely careful with mouth clicks, so this doesn't become an issue in the future for you.

It was great to see you improving and reaching your goal.

Thanks for your willingness to improve, I hope you have a great day.

    Juliet,

I'm here - sorry to be absent for a while. So glad you got that worked out. Good on you! You worked the problem and got it fixed.

With your talent, I have little doubt you'll get work.

    Best always,

    Joe
