    Hi Dave,

Fellow voice actor here, not a Bunny Manager, but will give feedback.

Great voice you have! From what I can hear, your room sounds pretty quiet.

Are you using compression? Seems like I hear a good bit on the sample. Also a performance nit-pic: I hear some mouth noise right after "6 billion people". You'll want to edit out that type of mouth noise. I drive myself crazy with those!

Again, great voice, the track just sounds over-processed to my ear. But I'm not the one that counts. Will be curious to hear what a Bunny Manager says.

    Regards,

    Joe Brown

Hi Dave, thanks for your submission, here my thoughts:

    • Background noise in 'story' at the beginning, sounds like something hit the mic stand, or around it.
    • Room tone, it is present all over your recording, it's clearly noticeable at 0:23 after 'where do we come from', could be the room tone, noise floor, or even hiss. Can you try and record something else to see if that's still there?

Please do try one more time taking care of those issues, for the first one you could be more careful with the mic stand, try and have a shock-mount for the mic, that actually helps a lot, place the mic stand over some carpet to provide some isolation from the ground.

    Hope this helps.

BTW, Joe, great input man! I've seen your comments on several posts, kudos for helping and reading about other pros, I'm sure that's very enlightening for you. For us is amazing to see other VO artists helping on the community, keep it up man!

    Hi guys,

Thanks for your comments. It is greatly appreciated. Especially as I would like my profile reactivated.

Some big changes made to the room here. No processing, but the addition of a Alctron Mic filter.

    Regards Dave

    Hello Dave,

I gave this a listen this morning - sounds much better to my ears, but I am still hearing a bit of the room, for example right after "oceans" and "But how did all this come about?".

You might try a noise gate, but not to take out all room tone - just to drop it about -10db during pauses.

Your voice sounds really great, good delivery and enunciation. Eager to hear you narrate science documentaries!

Suggestion: record some room tone - no voice - just room tone for perhaps a minute. Then listen carefully with good volume - on headphones probably - and see if you can identify what is causing the white noise ("hiss noise" as VB calls it).

I think you've made good strides in quality,

    Joe B

    Thank you Joe,

I really appreciate it. My original issue was the audio sounding boxy, which I think I've got rid of. I hadn't thought of a noise gate. I'll give it a go.

Hey Dave, thanks for the new recording, it's really good.

Tho... I must agree with Joe, there's still some hiss there affecting the quality of your audio. I think the best course of action is his suggestion. Do you think you can do that?

As you can see, we're all here to help you.

But be subtle. You don't want to take everything away or the v/o may start to sound robotic or artificial.

Again, great voice and read. Sounds great for all the British science documentaries that I frequently watch.

    Hi guys,

More changes here. Same mic and preamp but more acoustic foam to reduce background hiss.

    Regards Dave

    Hello Dave,

To my ear this is MUCH quieter! Love your reads. On the improvement side, I think I hear some close order reflections that I did not notice before, such as possible reflection from a nearby desk or maybe even the computer screen.

Two suggestions I've made before to others: cover the desk with towels to minimize those reflections off that surface; angle the computer screen up, down, left or right, to keep any reflected sound of your voice from coming right back to the microphone.

Again, much better to my ear - good job!

    Regards,

    Joe B.

    Hey, Gents!

Thanks for the input on Dave's sample, Joe. You're right in that the sound is much better. There's a problem with lingering frequencies (bass) which is causing 'boxiness'. A type of reverberation that prevents one's sound from being as flat as possible and relates to the volumetric characteristics of your recording space. This is very usual in smaller spaces or those with parallel surfaces.

If you could share a photo of your booth/recording room and ballpark measurements, we might be able to suggest a strategy that will help you get rid of this boxiness once and for all.

    Congrats on the improvements!

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all your comments, I really appreciate it. I have rearranged the whole room. Lost the Alctron mic filter. Added a simple pop shield. Added more acoustic tiles.

Adobe Audition software. Rode NT1A mic. Berhinger preamp.

I've been asked to remove samples that have won me quite a bit of work, so I'm really hoping to get my account reinstated.

    Regards Dave

    Holy smokes, Dave!

Gotta love that voice, the intention, and the new sound: congrats!

The one final issue to resolve is a bit of white noise audible in your latest file. This may be due to the gain settings on your preamp/interface. What kinda Behringer are you rocking these days?

Also, if you're using Adobe Audition, getting rid of the noise is super simple (provided we can't eliminate it from the source first as it would be best.) So, let's address the issue! Share your Behringer's info (settings too with pictures would help a bunch) so that we can figure this out.

In the meantime, click here to download and listen to your file with the simple processing that can be done in Audition, as this level of noise floor is what everyone should always aim for.

    Cheers!

    - Héctor.

    Hi,

The changes have been made. What noise reduction did you use? Behringer preamp shown below.
