Hi Michael, thanks for reaching out and being so open about feedback, we really appreciate that.

I was just looking at your project and I found the comments by the QC member who assessed your audio, here the remarks:

    Hi,

Thank you for your submission; we greatly appreciate your effort. Unfortunately, we have found the following issue(s) in your recording:

    -
There is an audible room echo (reverberation) impacting your recording. Please ensure you record in an acoustically treated space. If you already have acoustic treatment, it may not be adequate.

    - Your delivery sounds undesirably flat and monotone. Our clients expect natural and engaging reads, unless specifically instructed otherwise.

Please revise and resubmit so that we may proceed with the comprehensive screening of your audio.

We trust our feedback will help you improve the quality of your work and achieve professional results.

So following on what you said, yeah, you got the robotic/monotone part, and there is a little acoustics issue, probably you've had time to review this before but, here's a link to a post about acoustics: Basic acoustic treatment

Please let me know if you need further help with your acoustics or if you think you can get that fixed on your own.

Once again, kudos on your willingness to improve, we're here to help.

    Hi Johnatan,

Following up and saying thanks for pulling up the QC rejection reasons.

Regarding the acoustics, you helped me in another forum thread back in October and thought I had it resolved. I'm attaching a link to a photo of my recording area in my closet.  The other 3 sides not in the photo are a quilt suspended from the shelves up to 8 feet.  So it's basically a padded 3' x 3' area.  I do have my computer in the space and I angle it away from the mic. I cover the keyboard since I use the midi controller to run the software.  I've tried to follow all recommendations in the acoustic treatment article.  If you see anything in the photo that looks suspect, please feel free to point it out. Maybe I should try some more stuff in the upper left corner. I obviously ran out of the good foam!

I made one change today that is different than the photo…. I got rid of the built in pop filter that came with the mic.  It's metal; two perforated pieces separated by about 0.5 inch. I've always been leery of it, suspecting it has some kind of resonance and even alters the sound of my voice. This is a sample without using a pop filter… Any better?

As always, thanks for your help!!  -Michael

Hi Michael, always a pleasure to help you, so sorry it took some time.

I think that is working much better now, the acoustics are on point!

I do have one suggestion, but it's not technical related, it's more on the performance side. This recording could be perceived as monotone or flat, is there a way you can give us a more engaging reading?

    Cheers

Yes! I completely agree about the monotone/flatness. I even cringe a bit when I listen to the samples I have posted on my profile and feel like they need some performance polish. Now that I have more confidence in the technical aspects, I'm going to shift my focus more to performance.

In January I'm going to enroll in some group VO classes that we have in my location, hoping that will be of benefit.

I will add that I do get some anxiety just navigating the VB platform experience. I sense that it affects my breathing, resulting in my voice sounding more monotone than it normally is.  I suspect I may not be the first newbie to experience this. I will be posting some more questions in the other forums to get more familiar.  I think the forums are fantastic to help the artists and VB exchange feedback, and ultimately get a quality product to the client.

Thank you again for your time and suggestions!  -Michael

Thanks for your openness to our feedback, I'm sure this is going to help you grow significantly.

You're right, many other pros do feel that too, but just like you, they try their best to improve and come out on top of the situation. You got the technical part, that's halfway, now let's work on your performance, something that's been helpful to some of our artists is taking acting classes. I don't know if you see it this way but, voice acting, in essence, is acting, just without people looking at you, which makes it even harder to convey emotions or ideas to the audience. I think if you begin to see it that way, and you experiment about moving your body as you would if people were looking at you, your performance could improve.

Keep it up, you're on the right path.
