Feedback for Second Audition

Hello, Anne! Thank you for participating in this Community! :-)

This audio indeed comes with some issues :-((( ... Here's what can be done:

    • Electronic hum noise, audible at around 1000 hertz. Could this be coming from within your laptop?
    • Room resonance. It has boominess at lower frequencies :-( My initial hunch will be to use various diffusers and bass traps

    Microphone itself sounds good!! :-)

Could you please share various photos of where you record your voice? It is difficult to determine exactly what needs to be done from this audio... Thank you!! :-)

    Best regards,
    Oki

Hi Oki! thanks for the help. This has been a little frustrating for me.

    • I am not using a computer in the same room... and i record at night in a silent house, so I have no ideas of what the hum could be.
    • I attached pictures of the room hoping you can help me with the room resonance. It's a tiny closet that i have sound proofed...starting to think i might be out of options unless you see an obvious fix.

    Thanks again!

Thank you, Anne, for your reply! :-)

I see what's going on now! That was quite helpful.

Regarding the background hum, here I have isolated the noise for you. I hope this can help you identify this issue:

About the boominess/boxiness... Are you by any chance voicing TOWARD the corner? That will give you quite a boomy situation :-(((

Your microphone must be placed away from the room's corner, walls, windows, and hard surfaces (desk, for instance). It's always better to set the microphone on a proper mic stand.

By the way ... is the ceiling treated acoustically?

    Best regards,
    Oki

    Hi Oki,

I added a bunch more soundproofing to the room all over the place and I'm hoping the "boominess" is better now?

The hum is still very present. I can hear it in every recording. I did a bunch of tests tonight to try to isolate where the sound was coming from...but no luck. I even unplugged my refrigerator in the next room! haha

I have been recording to my Imac using a USB extension cord and this is the only thing left that I can think of that may be causing the humming sound. I ordered an adapter and I am going to try recording straight to my ipad pro to see if that helps.

What are you thoughts on that hypothesis of the cord for the hum?

Anyway... let me know what you think of the "boominess" in the recording below. I moved the mic to the middle of the room and its no longer on the table surface. I also added sound proofing to the ceiling and i have covered the door behind me.

    Thanks!

    Hi Anne,

My apology for the delayed reply :-(((

I would upgrade the USB cables and see if it helps:
    https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/756501-i-found-several-ways-to-remove-noise-from-usb-audio-cable/

Argh... the boominess (or acoustic resonance) is still there :-(((

You don't happen to be recording in an environment with parallel walls, do you? Have you treated the ceiling?

    BR,
    Oki

    Hi Oki,

My apologies for the slow reply! I received your message, but no matter what i tried i couldn't fix the issue. I decided to try an entirely new equipment set up. I think i finally have it. Let me know your thoughts. I'm really hoping to go for the second audition soon!

    Thanks

    Hello, Anne!

Whoa! What a difference!!! Now it's really beginning to sound like a pro-quality recording!! :-)

The recording level, however, is maxxed at -30 decibels or so... and that's way too low. Please adjust the preamp gain to see if you could fully utilise the digital audio's dynamic range (up to -3 dB). Please take your time to experiment around.

    Thank you!!

    Best,
    Oki
