    Hello Alexandria!

    How are you?

Thank you very much for reaching out and being part of our community.

I was listening to your audio and I'm noticing you are having some room echo on your recording as well as some background noise. Please be aware that in order to obtain professional results, you should be recording at an acoustically treated room.

The following link has useful information on acoustic treatment. Please make sure to read it so you can start fixing the issues in your room :).  (https://bit.ly/2MrNsSV)

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I'm happy to help.

    Kind regards,

    Gabriel

    Hi Gabriel,

Thank you for your feedback! I am recording with professional equipment in a treated small space with a pop filter. The article you linked was what I used to create my setup and was really helpful getting me started!

Do you have any ideas on where to start tweaking since I have the basics in place?

Thank you again for your help!

    Hello Alexandria!

It is my pleasure :). Please, upload some pictures of your recording space so I can see what we can do in order to improve the acoustic conditions of your space!

Looking forward to hear from you!

    Hi Gabriel,

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me feedback. Here are a few photos of my set up:

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gO4C9JPH_ARcNOCyKokOojEpay0S2NYD?usp=sharing

I have both sides of the shields cushioned with comforters and blankets and a mattress pad on top. The structure is on carpet and I also have an isolation shield around the mic in addition to pop filters inside. I keep my computer outside of the space when I record to avoid that noise disruption as well.

I gave recording another go with this set and here is the result:

I also tried recording in my walk in closet with this set up to see if even more padding helped. Here is the result of that recording:

Is one a better place to start tweaking than the other? I figured it couldn't hurt to try a couple of different set ups just in case. Do you have any ideas on what I can improve in my set up to be able to meet quality control standards?

Thank you again for your help! I really appreciate your time and support!

    Have a great day!

    Hello Alexandria! How are you??

Thank you for submitting the pictures of your space as well as the new audios. I was listening to the recordings and this time the acoustics are sounding better, both places are working. However, the issue that I'm noticing is the background noise in both recordings.

At first, I thought that maybe it was the sound of your computer. But as you are telling me that you leave it out of the recording space, I'm not sure if this is the case. Maybe there is some A/C in both places that might be causing this noise?

Please, make sure there are no devices besides the computer that might be causing this kind of noise. If there are no possible things that might be causing this issue, then I think the noise will probably be some hiss/white noise caused by your setup.

In order to avoid this, please make sure to lower the gain level on your recording equipment (preamp/interface) and select a level that prints a signal of -9 to -6 dB maximum while recording. After that, you should normalize your best recording to -3 dBFS Peak Level. You should not hear any noise (like a balloon letting air out [hiss]), your echoes should be minimal, and there shouldn’t be any presence or plosives or excess sibilance.

If there is still noise present, you might want to change different cables or inputs of your interface/pre-amp, even trying a different mic if possible, to start to rule out what part of your gear might be causing the problem.

Please let me know how this goes.

Hoping you are having a great week!

Hi Gabriel! How are you? I hope you have been having a great week!

I am doing really well and am so excited that my recording is slowly improving! Thank you so much for your feedback. I had everything shut off when I recorded and triple checked the whole house for anything turned on. I am hoping the settings you suggested do the trick and will give that a go.

Do you think a shock mount might help with that as well? I ordered one with my original equipment purchase, but it took a wrong turn somewhere in the delivery process so a new one is on the way.

I will make those tweaks and post the results ASAP.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me get better and improve. I really appreciate it!

    Have a great day!

    Hello Alexandria!

Sure, I'll be waiting for your audios :). I think the shock mount might work to help you locate the microphone better and try different positions to see which one yields the best results, but I don't think it will do something to resolve the issue we are trying to get better here. The noise should be something of your gear or of some device or machine near to your recording space. If there isn't any device that might be causing the issue, it should be something related with your gear.

Please let me know if you need anything else in the meantime.

    Have a nice weekend.

    Gabriel
