Seeking clarity on rejection
Hi all,
I could do with some guidance on why my application was rejected as I can't see the issues with it at this end.
For the first pass it was rejected because there was room each, which surprised me as I couldn't hear that but I re-recorded anyway. I was asked to resubmit and the second time I got the following:
1) Room Echo - The acoustic conditions in your recording are not ideal. The \'sound\' of your room is audible in your deliverable even at its present amplitude levels.
2) Levels - Your audio levels are soft, not normalized to the -3dBFS Peak Level prescribed by Bunny Standards.
3) Sound Signature - Your deliverable appears to have been produced using non-professional equipment, due to the unbalanced frequency response, and limited dynamics. These could also be caused/enhanced by processing.
I disagree on all three points.
1 - I recorded in a small booth which is lined with Arrowzoom sound absorbing treatment panels and even when played back at high volumes I'm not hearing any echo or room noise.
2 - both submissions were normalised to -3dB in Sound Studio. To check I re-ran the files that I had submitted through normalisation and it made no difference to the volumes at all.
3 - I'm using what I'd consider professional equipment, Marantz Professional MPM-1000 condenser mic (low-end professional certainly, but not a piece of junk) connected via XLR to a Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD audio interface which is hooked up to my MacBook Pro. There was no post-processing used, all that I had in the chain was a -60dB noise gate to remove any breath sounds.
I'd appreciate comments on the two samples that I submitted
Sample 1 - just rejected for echo
Sample 2 - rejected for all three reasons

Hi, Bill.
Well, to start you've got a great dynamic delivery! Now, I've listened to both these samples and I cannot hear anything that reflects the points these VO were rejected for. Pulling both files into my DAW and investigating, the peak value OF EACH is -3dB, please see attached screengrab, so point number 2 isn't correct. IMO of twenty years of broadcast and live event production, the reasons these were rejected are incorrect.
Just seen how to insert pics so I've included a corroborative image.
Thanks Ray
Is anyone from BunnyStudio QC able to comment on my rejection please?
It has been almost a week and postings later than mine have been commented on?
Thanks Hiroshi,
I’ll have another pass at it this weekend after moving things around in my booth a bit.
Is the echo/boxiness something that you are just hearing subjectively or is it something that can be picked up with waveform monitoring tools?
I use Beyer-Dynamic DT440 headphones via my audio interface, which show up a lot of detail, and yet I’m clearly not hearing what you are. So is there a tool that I could use to analyse the recordings for echo?
Bill
Hi Hiroshi,
I've made some changes to my recording space and my process. Have a listen to this reworked version and let me know what you think.

Hi Hiroshi,
hopefully I have addressed the above issues on this latest version

Thanks Hiro,
much appreciated

Hi Hiro,
just under the 30 day mark and I’ve not heard anything about a new application. Can you please confirm that it is in progress.
Bill
Hi Hiro,
can you update me on what is happening please as I still haven’t heard anything.
Bill
Hello again, Bill and Hiro,
So just to butt into this conversation again, does that mean that rejections are shown on the profile? Who sees them? Prospective clients? When one applies for a gig through VB, is there a flag that says, "Bill was rejected by us previously'? *for the sake of argument.
If so, is that a fair thing to do, given that whoever had a rejection previously would have by default improved to be accepted a second time? Who exactly benefits from that? The end client presumably, but it seems that your inferring that the onus of a prior rejection is a black mark forever borne by the applicant.
Is that the case?
Hi Hiro,
could you go ahead with resetting my account please
Bill
Hi Hiro,
I’m pleased to say that I’ve now passed the test and am ready to start receiving work.
Many thanks for your assistance.
